The Brouhaha by Kyle Rankin -- Software to enforce DRM on the new Beastie Boys CD has caused a bit of a stir as it installs silently and at least under MacOS, doesn't seem to provide an uninstall tool. I'm apparently not the only one who didn't know CDs were trying to enforce DRM this way.
I subscribe to bugtraq among other mailing lists, and this week I noticed an interesting post about DRM software included on the new Beastie Boys CD. Apparently part of the autorun process on the CD is to silently install a copy protection system on Windows and Mac--a system that apparently includes a uninstaller for Windows, but not MacOS.
Other sites have reported apparently that this DRM software install is common practice for all EMI CDs except for those in the UK and US (so my disc doesn't have this "feature"), and that the Beastie Boys didn't want DRM on the disc but couldn't overrule EMI's policy.
Ich kann mir das ziemlich genau vorstellen: „Yo, we don’t like this shit on our cd“ „But it helps us to sell more cds – and if your fans don’t like it, they can get vinyl“ „Oh well, who gives a f**k anyway„
Update: Ian sez, "Hi, I'm not sure who posted re: Beastie Boys copy protection, but I just spoke with Mike D and their management and they wanted me to pass along that a) This is all territories except the US and UK -- US and UK discs do not have this protection on them; b) All EMI CDs are treated this way, theirs isn't receiving special treatment; c) They would have preferred not to have the copy protection, but weren't allowed to differ from EMI policy."
Alles *’#!$@§$!
